Rules & Guidelines

Application Window: September 1, 2020 through November 1, 2020

Please read the current CAPMT Student Program Guidelines. Deviation from these rules may result in disqualification.

Ensemble Auditions Instrumentation Guidelines

  • Levels: Elementary | Intermediate | Advanced. The placement of the student is the responsibility of the teacher and is determined according to the difficulty of repertoire.

  • Instrumentation may include but is not limited to:

    • Same instruments (e.g., piano duet, two pianos, two flutes without accompaniment)

    • Mixed instruments (e.g., violin & piano sonata, flute/oboe/clarinet trio, string quartet)
      • Electronic instruments in combination with acoustic instruments (e.g., flute & prepared tape, cello & synthesizer, electric guitar & drums). Electronic instrument ensembles must involve at least one live performer.

  • Eligible repertoire includes music originally written for the chosen ensemble and published transcriptions.
    • Unpublished transcriptions accompanied by written permission of the publisher of the original work are acceptable. An additional score must be provided for the adjudicator for live events.
    • One selection, or several movements, from the same work may be presented, as long as the work falls within the time limit.• No repeats over 16 measures should be played. Exception: If the repeat demonstrates a technique/skill - showing additional Baroque ornamentation, for example.• Music need NOT be memorized and is to be performed without a conductor.
In questions regarding appropriate repertoire, the decision of the State Chair is final.

Vocal Ensemble Repertoire Guidelines

  • Levels: Elementary • Intermediate • Advanced. The placement of the student is the responsibility of the teacher and is determined according to the difficulty of repertoire.

  • Eligible repertoire includes music originally written for the chosen ensemble and published transcriptions.

  • Repertoire may be freely chosen from the fields of opera, motets, madrigals, sacred repertoire, choral repertoire, folk songs, and musical theater.

  • Unpublished transcriptions accompanied by written permission of the publisher of the original work are acceptable. An additional score must be provided for the adjudicator.

  • One selection or several movements from the same work may be presented.

  • No repeats over 16 measures should be sung. Exception: If the repeat demonstrates a technique/skill - showing additional Baroque ornamentation, for example.

  • Memorization is optional, but works may be memorized and semi-staged (in the case of opera excerpts), if desired. All music presented is to be sung without a conductor.

  • For accompanied or unaccompanied vocal ensembles of up to eight performers.

  • The accompanist may be a teacher or other professional (collaborative pianist) and will not be evaluated.

  • Only the singers will be evaluated, and each singer must perform his/her own vocal line; i.e., there is to be NO doubling of singers on an individual part.

  • Performers will be stopped if the maximum allotted time is reached; this will not affect the results.

  • There can be no repertoire changes at any point in the auditions.

  • At least one member of the vocal ensemble must be a student of the sponsoring teacher, or the entire ensemble must meet for regular coaching with the sponsoring teacher.

  • If applicable, teachers are responsible for providing instruments (other than piano).
